Hillside’s One Family program empowers family and kinship caregivers to safely care and plan for children / vulnerable adults in order to prevent non-relative placement. This service provides education to kinship caregivers, and assists families with coordination of Family Group Decision Making meetings in order to improve safety and permanency for youth or vulnerable adults. Through this process, our goal is to decrease the number of individuals in non-relative placement.

About this Program

The One Family program provides a wrap- around services aimed to support placement with kinship caregivers. Through a twofold approach, workers partner with family members to develop and strengthen connections, support kinship placement, and decrease out of home placements. The Care Coordinator assists the family in coordinating Family Group Decision Making meetings. Through these meetings, family members are empowered to make family plans to support their unique strengths and needs. The Skillbuilder provides in-home services designed to address and support the unique challenges and needs of kinship caregivers. The Skillbuilder also teaches these caregivers to address and manage relationship dynamics within the family unit.

The Skillbuilder works collaboratively with the Kinship Caregiver to assess their needs that can include but are not limited to:

  • Loss/ Loyalty
  • Role/Boundary Redefinition
  • Guilt/Embarrassment
  • Child Rearing Practices
  • Stress Management/ Physical Limitations
  • Bonding and Attachment
  • Anger and Resentment
  • Fantasies of Reunification
  • Overcompensation

Intensive services are provided in the relative caregiver/family’s home on an as-needed basis for approximately three months. The One Family program is voluntary and of no cost to eligible families.
